Babino Polje is the biggest settlement on the Croatian most forested island Mljet in archipelago of Dubrovnik. Although the village is not at the coast, it grew to the administrative center of the island with 336 residents today. A fertile soil around the village terminated its significance during the past, when agriculture was the most important economy branch of the island. Today Mljet is famous around the globe as one of the prettiest Croatian islands with the National Park on it. Thus, the main occupation is no longer agriculture, but tourism, and Mljet is managing to satisfy curiosity and eager for amusement of the great number of its guests from all around. Babino Polje is settled at the center of the island beneath the highest peak, what made it excellent starting point for hiking and claiming tours. It also has well maintained and picturesque camp, churches and palaces testifying of Mljet`s glory history and restaurant with traditional home-grown food. It is also the area known for hunting tourism. Accommodations consists of private apartments and rooms. Babino Polje was founded already in 7th century. During the period of Dubrovnik Republic, in Babino Polje was the siege of Mljet`s duke. The legend says that the name Babino Polje, which means Granny`s Field, came out from the gifted land some duke made to an old lady, who was advising him during some local war. Babino Polje is six kilometers away from Sobra, ferry port of the island, and about 20 kilometers away from National Park Mljet. Since Babino Polje is settled half way from Odysseys cave, a site where diving becomes a mythical experience, and sandy beach Sutmiholjska, paradise on Earth, Babino Polje is excellent starting point for investigation of this magical peace of Adriatic.
