Okuklje is a small bay, which can be found on a north side of the island Mljet. This port is a part of a larger area called Marovići, situated on a part of the island that is nearest to town Dubrovnik, famous all over the globe. Okuklje is the bay protecting only 20 inhabitants in its secure arms, sheltering them from every wind that blows in this climate conditions. And though in summer time Mediterranean climate is showing only its smiled face, winter can be pretty rough on the island. In the past this small peaceful port was often a target of many pirates through the centuries. Okuklje has been created in time of Dubrovnik Republic and, at that time, it was pretty secure and became refuge for many people from surrounding villages. Okuklje is mentioned for the first time in documents from the year 1414. While the pirates were attacking the rest of the area, Okuklje was the trading port from where people of Mljet carried their goods; wine, oil, fish and woods to Dubrovnik. In the17th century, the pirate attacks were more frequent then ever before. Of all the attacks, the most devastating was in the year 1669. when the troops of Venetian commander Deangelis with 800 pirates ruined the foundations of Okuklje bay and surrounding coast places. People left Okuklje in 1693. and the place was abandoned until 1981. Today, Okuklje is the small tourist oasis, with well developed tourist offer, which reads in lively private apartments and quality restaurants with delicious tasty dishes of Dalmatian food plenty of fresh fish and mild Mediterranean spices.
