Istria in Croatia

  • Published: 29/11/2009

I`ll tell You the story why I fell in love with small Mediterranean region called Istria.
Istria is the Southwest part of Croatia and You can find it there like a little continent apart from the mainland, bathed in sun and washed up by the sea. Therefore it’s land is so fertile; the red soil extends in the coastal  part and in the inside and white soil donates the great area of vineyards which thrive to the sun.

Even though Istria is not big, it has lots of micro locations of vineyards all over the region. For people who live there the wine is the way of living and loving, it is a drink for soul and magical fluid carrying you in the world full of mysteries.  Those just visiting are the vine lovers yet to became. The wine roads are intertwined through all Istria territory from main stations Buje, Poreč, Buzet and Pazin, Rovinj and Vodnjan to small villages with even smaller basements in which the smell of  grape is melted into dusty walls.

There are three famous sorts of wines which dominate in this area; the first is famous Istrian Malvazija, who has a hundred year old tradition composed in good quality, luxuriance fertility and beautiful color varying from hay yellow to gold yellow. Malvazija smell reminds on fresh almond flower on a spring sunny day and, because of that, it can be composed with every seafood meal.
Second, but also great wine of Istria, is Teran, it represents total counterbalance to malvazija in every way and the first one is color – people in Istra call it black wine because it's red color like dark ruby is shining in all it's glory.  Like fresh fruit it leaves striking taste in your mouth and makes it unforgettable.
Teran is also considered an alternative medicine, healing all diseases. It can be added to meals with meet and stronger food with lots of calories.
Last but not the least is Istrian muškat or Momjanski moškat, as the natives call it. With it's gold, shiny color and intensive smell of wild and attractive carnation, leaves breathless everyone who taste it. Because of it's sweet and dry performance it is served with desserts or other delicious food.
The most interesting story about this wine is his aromatic property. For all passionate wine lovers, I recommend not to drink and drive, because of the strict Croatian laws, but enjoy the beautiful istrian wines combined with delicious, domestic food, good and worm hosts and comfortable accommodation on their wine estates.

Cheers!
