Ilok Cellars are the treasure of eastern Croatia and one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in the country. Affordable accommodation in Ilok means exploring the rich winemaking history of the region, and that journey begins underground, in cellars that are centuries old. The winemaking tradition around Ilok dates back more than 2,000 years. Particularly renowned is the cultivation of premium grape varieties in the vineyards of Principovac and Vukovo, located on the western slopes of Fruška Gora, gently descending towards the mighty Danube. Ilok Cellars were built around the year 1450 beneath the Ilok castle by Nikola Iločki, the then-ruler of Slavonia. After the retreat of the Ottomans at the end of the 17th century, the castle came into the possession of the Odescalchi family. Livio Odescalchi planted the first vines of Traminac around the summer residence on the hill known as Principovac in 1710, marking the beginning of the tradition of cultivating this grape variety in Ilok. Ilok Cellars symbolize the preservation of the winemaking heritage of Croatia, with a strong focus on the production of Traminac and Graševina. Traminac from Ilok stands out in particular, and interestingly, wine from these very cellars was served at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and again at the coronation of King Charles III in 2023. Visitors can explore the historic cellars today, enjoy tastings of premium wines, and learn more about the rich winemaking history of this remarkable region.
