Privlaka Saltworks

On the far western edge of picturesque Dalmatia, ​accommodation in Privlaka offers more than just a peaceful summer getaway. The story of the Privlaka Saltworks is a relatively recent discovery that sheds new light on the rich and layered history of the place. In 2016, archaeological excavations at Cape Soline, in the northwest part of Privlaka, revealed a surprising truth. What was long believed to be the ruins of the ancient Church of St. Christopher turned out to be something entirely different - and just as significant. Experts uncovered that the structure was, in fact, a medieval salt storage facility, part of the historic Privlaka Saltworks. The remnants of this salt production site still lie beneath the sea near the cape. Meanwhile, the real Church of St. Christopher was found on the nearby islet of Školjić, adding yet another layer of mystery and historical richness to the area.
