Darda is a settlement and municipality in the Osijek-Baranja County. Accommodation in Darda takes us to the eastern part of Croatia, near the edges of Kopački Rit, about 10 kilometers north of Osijek. The marshy terrain extends to Darda, adorned by three lakes, giving it the charm of a lowland town. According to the latest census, Darda has around seven thousand residents, including the surrounding villages. Like many other Slavonian towns, the center of Darda is surrounded by the castle of the old noble family Esterhazy, in this case, of Hungarian origin. Darda itself is on the way from Osijek to Hungary, along the railway line Osijek – Pecs. Darda was first mentioned in 1410 as the property of Ladislav Szigeti. It was also under Ottoman rule, and in the war conflicts of 1664, it was completely destroyed. The Turks withdrew at the end of the 17th century, leaving the settlement to the Croats and Serbs. Despite tumultuous historical events, Darda is now a serene place whose residents are predominantly engaged in agriculture. The metal and wood industries are still robust, with a particular emphasis on the processing of marsh reed. We will visit Darda when we crave warm Slavonian and Baranja hospitality, indulge in the gastronomic magic of the Croatian east, and explore the natural splendor of the Podravina region.
