Kaštel Benković

Kaštel Benković is perched on a hill above the town of Benkovac, standing as a significant historical landmark from the 15th century. It is believed that the noble Benković family built the castle, which was later named after them. Over the centuries, Kaštel Benković underwent various changes, including Ottoman occupation in the 16th century, when two round towers were added to strengthen its defenses. After the Ottomans withdrew, the fortress lost its military function and gradually transformed into a residential complex. Today, the castle has been restored and serves as the home of the Benkovac Heritage Museum, which preserves a rich collection of archaeological, ethnological, and cultural-historical artifacts from the region. Visitors can explore the history of the area through the permanent exhibits of the museum and enjoy the cultural events regularly hosted within the castle walls.
