The only volcano in Croatia

The only volcano in Croatia, more precisely, a preserved fossil one, is located at the Gaveznica - Kameni Vrh site in Lepoglava. It is a fascinating geological monument of nature. The only volcano in Croatia was formed approximately 22 million years ago and is now recognizable for its specific deposit of the semi-precious stone agate. It was the exploitation of stone for road construction in the last century that revealed the interior of the volcano, creating a natural amphitheater that today serves as an open-air museum. A walk through Gaveznica allows you to see different layers of volcanic rocks and learn about the processes that shaped the current relief of northern Croatia. The entire site is equipped with educational trails and info boards, making it an excellent destination for a family trip or a school excursion. From the top, there is a beautiful view of Lepoglava and its surroundings, and the peaceful atmosphere contributes to the experience of this geological rarity, which was declared a protected nature monument in 1998.
