Koločep is a little rock 5 kilometers away from famous Dubrovnik in archipelago Elafiti. Yet, it is a rock gifted by fertile ground and plenty of water, so Koločep is overgrown by dense plants. People from Dubrovnik, who find Koločep their getaway from a great number of tourists when they besiege their town, call it Kalamota as well. They recognized the value of this small peaceful piece of paradise long time ago, so the island is inhabited in early Antics. Today it has two settlements Gornje (Upper) and Donje (lower) Čelo, lying in two sandy bays. They are connected by 3 kilometers long walk across the green gardens of the island. Although the island takes just 2,3 square kilometers, it has seven Ante Romanic churches from the times of Croatian kings. In times of Republic of Dubrovnik, Koločep was a shipyard and its residents famous sailors all over the world. Two sailors from Koločep were among the crew of Colombo’s Santa Maria on their voyage to America. Today, Koločep has just 150 residents. Since the island is well connected by boat lines with Dubrovnik, economy is low; people used to live by the agriculture and animal keeping. The only economy branch left is tourism. The beauty of the island is a guarantee that in summer time, Koločep needs extra bed. It has one hotel and a number of private apartments and rooms with a scent of glorious history among its walls and windows looking at the sea. The island used to have fisherman society, but today there is no single professional fisherman. Yet, restaurants don’t lack with fresh sea fruits and fish, and even the guests can attempt fishing in an eve or night fishing, which is the island tradition. Amongst other, here you can take boat excursions, dive, walk, swim and take kayak trips in a crystal blue around this pearl of south Adriatic.
