Kastelina Vir

What is there to see in Vir, beside comfortable apartments, and the blue sea? Historical dashes of this fertile soil of the coast of Ravni Kotari will show us a way. The area once had an enormous importance due to the vicinity of Zadar, an important traffic point on European roads towards east. By the sea, but also near enough to the mainland to be the part of it, Vir was the first line of defense of the medieval towns Nin and Zadar for centuries. The Venetians built a fortress here at the end of the 16th and early 17th century, which ought to protect these cities from Uskoks and Turks. The function of the fortress has changed over the centuries, but the the building remained beauty which dominants in the landscape. It is an interesting tourist attraction today. It is located in the area of Kozjak, a few steps from the sea, called Kastelina due to its almost feminine beauty and grace that attracts sighs. The crests of Venetian Providuri for Dalmatia was performed continuously on its facade, as well as each of them ruled the Kastelina over time. There is preserved facade with the towers today, which was restored at the beginning of the 21st century. The north tower has recognizable winged lion, the symbol of Venetian power of that past time. Near Kastelina you can let yourself go to a healing effect of the peloid mud, and whose benefits were well known and appreciated by the old Venetians.
